Parents intend to sue school board

It drives me nuts to talk to housebroken "conservatives" who think government-run schools are a right up there with the right to free speech and to bear arms. I remind them that these schools are nothing more than socialized education AT BEST, and AT WORST, indoctrination centers for creating loyal subjects.

Frustrated that their alleged "representatives" on the school board approved a disruptive school reassignment plan, parents in Union County, North Carolina, are now resorting to a costly, drawn-out lawsuit. I wish them the best of luck, because their motivations are good, but the only real answer is to privatize education. In the meantime, they should secede and home school their children. Who knows? The kids might not only learn more, but might even grow closer to their families. (Which is why the government loathes home schools.)

Excellent Old Rebel!
I was never blessed with a family(which means I don't know anything about this subject), but I never could understand how Christians could send their kids to government indoctrination centers.
As for why the government loathes home schools, I didn't make the connection you do; of course! I always figured it was the teachers unions.

If you get the chance, read John Taylor Gatto's; "Dumbing us Down." Many features of modern schooling are designed to isolate kids from family. Homework is designed to disrupt after school home life, for instance.

My dad was and remains a workaholic. Nevertheless, on most nights he made time to do my homework with me. He otherwise always made time for his children.

I like the idea of parents helping children with homework.

There's too much pollution in the schools and mass media. One can't remove children from society entirely, but it seems almost necessary to remove at least some children from that. Some will be fine no matter what.

Hillary Clinton is right: A village raises a child. Parents don't have absolute influence, but they can improve the environment.

I think socialising is great. Ballroom dance lessons and gatherings (with other children), karate, fencing, hunting, boy scouts, wrestling, gardening etc. They don't have to learn everything, but perhaps something like dance is fundamental for interacting with the opposite sex.

The pop culture portrays such activities as unattractive - somehow life in the ghetto though is "cool". Children don't begin to think clearly until they're 20, perhaps 30. Some are life-long fools. It's bad if they see negative values as "cool".

I recall trying to be "cool" from about middle school until freshman year of college. It's a waste of time, to say the least. Children should have civilising ideals.

Homeschoolers tend to do better than others.

If they're socially unadjusted, I have to say I doubt public school children who strut like gorillas with their underwear showing is somehow better.

They can interact outside the schools. If enough people do the same, there'll be a movement with more opportunities for the children.

I know several families that home school & they tell me the "socialization" issue is a myth. For instance, they belong to an organization of home schoolers. The local group meets once a week for what is called group lessons. Parents take turns teaching classes(that's a quick summary)
Of course there are other ways the children can interact with other children.
Even though I'm not a parent, it bugs me that here in NY, the local school districts still oversee everything by law. The parents have to get the curriculum approved by them & they do testing of the kids as well. After all, they are the professionals!
