The plantation system was nursed in southern Iberia (south Portugal and Spain), spread to the Iberian isles of the eastern Atlantic, taken to northeastern Brazil and from there spread to Barbados and the Leeward Islands and finally on to South Carolina and the Lower South in 1670s.
